Because of Them

Bronze

11.5" X 10.5" X 0.5"

January 2002

This piece is the third in a series of three faces for an installation entitled Feminine BeautyBecause of Them represents a life wasted in trying to become "beautiful."  Physical beauty always diminishes with age.  The young female figure flowing from the hair represents the stage of youth in the elderly woman's life--a stage that was just a small portion of her life, but one that she is still expected to live up to.  Consequently, she lavishly fixes her hair and ornaments her body with jewelry.  The heart within her hair on the left of her necklace symbolizes her need to be desired.
